Paul Fried has long been regarded as one of the America's foremost flutists. The Los Angeles Times has described his playing as " masterful". The Santa Barbara New Press has described his playing as " absolutely stunning". Paul began his studies with his father Milton Fried a professional musician who was an outstanding "doubler" in New York and Las Vegas. From the age of eight to eleven, he began studying with the world renowned flutist Julius Baker. He along with his older brothers who played oboe and bassoon, received full scholarships at Juilliard Preparatory School in New York. In 1958, his family moved out to Las Vegas Nevada. Paul was offered his first orchestral position with the Utah Symphony at the age of 16, turning it down to go to college at Juilliard.

He continued his studies at Juilliard with Julius Baker, and received a BS degree in June of 1970. In April of 1970, at age 23, he won a position with the Boston Symphony, conducted by William Steinberg. After four months he was appointed Assistant Principal flute, and later Principal Flute of the Boston Pops. After 12 years in the BSO, he moved on to play Principal flute with the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1982 to 1985.

In December 1976, after an open audition in New York that November, Fried was invited to perform as Principal Flute with the Berlin Philharmonic in Berlin, under Herbert van Karajan.  He has lived in Los Angeles since September of 1985, and has over 200 movies and films to his credit. Movies include many of the Lethal Weapon movies, and Die Hard movies, scored in Los Angeles with composer Michael Kamen. He has also been the principal flutist and piccolo for many of the movies composed by David Newman, including Ice Age, Twins, Anastasia and others. Other composers he has recorded with include John Williams, Patrick Williams, David Kitay and Bruce Broughton and Kevin Kaska.

For the last 20 years Paul has been the principal flute of the New West Symphony and principal flute for many of the concerts given by Andrea Bocelli on his West Coast tours, both in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Paul Fried has 11 solo recordings and some 40 or so videos.  He also has an exercise book he composed titled 25 Warm Ups and Caprices, a number of duets and a woodwind quintet - Klezmer Style.  Both the exercise book and the solo CDs can be heard and purchased at paulfried.com and CDbaby.com  - The exercise book can also be downloaded quickly, via the  online company - scorevivo.com
